I. Essential Laboratory Equipment

Microscopes

: The cornerstone of biological investigation, microscopes magnify specimens to reveal cellular structures and microscopic organisms. Compound microscopes use multiple lenses for high magnification, while stereo microscopes provide three-dimensional views of larger specimens. Electron microscopes offer the highest magnification, revealing even subcellular structures.

Balances

: Accurate measurement of mass is crucial in biology. Analytical balances provide highly precise measurements (to the milligram), while top-loading balances offer less precision but greater speed and convenience for larger samples.

Centrifuges

: These machines separate components of a mixture based on density. Different types exist, including refrigerated centrifuges (for temperature-sensitive samples) and ultracentrifuges (for very high speeds). Applications range from isolating blood components to separating cellular organelles.

Incubators and Ovens

: Incubators maintain a constant temperature, ideal for growing microorganisms or cultivating cells. Ovens provide high-temperature heat for sterilization or drying samples.

Autoclaves and Sterilization Equipment

: Autoclaves use high-pressure steam to sterilize equipment and materials, eliminating microorganisms. Other sterilization methods include dry heat sterilization and filtration.

Water Baths and Heating Blocks

: Water baths provide a consistent temperature for heating samples gently, while heating blocks offer precise temperature control for individual samples in tubes or vials.

pH Meters and Conductivity Meters

: These instruments measure the acidity or alkalinity (pH) and the ability of a solution to conduct electricity (conductivity), crucial parameters in many biological experiments.

II. Specialized Equipment for Molecular Biology

PCR Machines

: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines amplify specific DNA sequences, crucial for genetic analysis, diagnostics, and cloning.

Electrophoresis Equipment

: Gel electrophoresis separates DNA, RNA, or proteins based on size and charge, enabling researchers to analyze genetic material or protein mixtures.

Spectrophotometers

: These instruments measure the absorbance or transmission of light through a solution, allowing the quantification of DNA, RNA, proteins, and other substances.

Microcentrifuges and Micro-pipettes

: Essential for handling small volumes of samples in molecular biology techniques, offering precision and efficiency.

III. Specialized Equipment for Microbiology

Inoculating Loops and Needles

: Sterile tools used to transfer microorganisms between cultures or plates.

Petri Dishes and Culture Media

: Petri dishes provide a sterile environment for growing microorganisms, while culture media provide the necessary nutrients for microbial growth.

Microscopes (Specialized)}

: Dark-field and phase-contrast microscopes are particularly useful for visualizing microorganisms without staining, preserving their natural state.

Autoclaves (Microbiology Focus)}

: The importance of complete sterilization in microbiology is paramount to prevent contamination. Autoclaves are critical in maintaining sterility within the microbiology lab.

Incubators (Microbiology Focus)}

: Microbes have varying optimal growth temperatures. Incubators allow researchers to control conditions for optimal growth of targeted species.

IV. Safety Equipment and Procedures

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

: Includes lab coats, gloves, goggles, and face shields to protect researchers from hazardous materials and potential spills.

Fume Hoods and Biosafety Cabinets

: Designed to contain hazardous fumes or biological agents, protecting both researchers and the environment.

Waste Disposal Procedures

: Proper disposal protocols are crucial for handling biological waste and chemicals safely and responsibly, according to relevant regulations.

V. Maintenance and Calibration

Regular cleaning and disinfection of equipment are essential for maintaining sterility and preventing cross-contamination. Calibration ensures accurate measurements across experiments, contributing to reliable results.

  biology laboratory equipments: Plant Respiration Hans Lambers, Univ. de les Illes Balears, 2006-03-30 Respiration in plants, as in all living organisms, is essential to provide metabolic energy and carbon skeletons for growth and maintenance. As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant’s carbon budget. Depending on species and environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis – even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. A common thread throughout this volume is to link respiration, including alternative oxidase activity, to plant functioning in different environments.

Three enabling technologies at hand for human PSCs are 1) directed reprogramming of somatic cells, which eliminate many of the ethical issues associated with the derivation and use of human PSCs, increase genetic diversity of the available human PSC lines, and give rise to better in vitro human disease models; 2) the discovery that a Rho-associated protein Kinase (ROCK) inhibitor allows for efficient single cell passaging and cryopreservation, increasing the efficiency and reliability of hPSC culture; and 3) defined, animal-component-free media, which lay the groundwork for simplified scale-up for therapeutic applications, differentiation protocols, and toxicology screens. The aforementioned technologies can be found in Human Pluripotent Stem Cells: Methods and Protocols, a compilation of 33 detailed protocols in six categories of PSC research that cover laboratory essentials and the derivation of new PSC lines, including induced PSC lines, as well as their growth, maintenance, characterization, genetic manipulation, and differentiation.   biology laboratory equipments: Lab Coats in Hollywood David A. Kirby, 2013-02-08 How science consultants make movie science plausible, in films ranging from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Finding Nemo. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, released in 1968, is perhaps the most scientifically accurate film ever produced. The film presented such a plausible, realistic vision of space flight that many moon hoax proponents believe that Kubrick staged the 1969 moon landing using the same studios and techniques. Kubrick's scientific verisimilitude in 2001 came courtesy of his science consultants—including two former NASA scientists—and the more than sixty-five companies, research organizations, and government agencies that offered technical advice. Although most filmmakers don't consult experts as extensively as Kubrick did, films ranging from A Beautiful Mind and Contact to Finding Nemo and The Hulk have achieved some degree of scientific credibility because of science consultants. In Lab Coats in Hollywood, David Kirby examines the interaction of science and cinema: how science consultants make movie science plausible, how filmmakers negotiate scientific accuracy within production constraints, and how movies affect popular perceptions of science. Drawing on interviews and archival material, Kirby examines such science consulting tasks as fact checking and shaping visual iconography. Kirby finds that cinema can influence science as well: Depictions of science in popular films can promote research agendas, stimulate technological development, and even stir citizens into political action.
