business & society journal: Business and Society Anne T. Lawrence, James Weber, James E. Post, 2004-04-01 Business and Society: Stakeholder Relations, Ethics and Public Policy by Lawrence/Weber/Post, has continued through several successive author teams to be the market-leader in its field. For over thirty years, Business and Society has been updated and reinvented in response to society’s relationship to business. Business and Society, 11e highlights why government regulation is sometimes required as well as new models of business-community collaboration. Business and Society, 11e is a book with a point of view. Lawrence, Weber and Post believe that businesses have social (as well as economic) responsibilities to society; that business and government both have important roles to play in the modern economy; and that ethics and integrity are essential to personal fulfillment and to business success. The book is designed to be easily modularized; an instructor who wishes to focus on a particular portion of the material may select individual chapters or cases to be packaged in a Primis custom product.

business & society journal: Marketing Ethics & Society Lynne Eagle, Stephan Dahl, 2015-09-15 Marketing, while essential to organisational success, is arguably one of the most controversial aspects of business management. Criticisms of marketing’s impact range from fostering materialism and unsustainable consumption patterns through to the use of deception, stifling of innovation and lowering of quality, to name but a few. Taking a holistic and international perspective, this book critically examines the ethical challenges marketing faces and explores strategies marketers can use to respond to those challenges. The book examines specific aspects of marketing activities, such as ethical considerations in relation to young consumers, potentially harmful products and criticism of the societal impact of medical, arts and tourism marketing activities. It then combines these with wider discussions of frameworks that enable marketers to respond to ethical challenges, supplemented by discussions of cross-cultural and international perspectives, consumer responses and ethical consumption movements as well as shifting historical perceptions of marketing ethics. The book is accompanied by a companion website including: PowerPoint slides and teaching notes per chapter, links to free SAGE journal articles and online videos selected per chapter by the authors, quizzes per chapter and links to further reading online.

business & society journal: Internet Society Maria Bakardjieva, 2005-04-19 `A highly topical, interesting and lively analysis of ordinary internet use, based on both theoretically competent reflections and sound ethnographic material′ - Joost van Loon, Reader in Social Theory at Nottingham Trent University Internet Society investigates internet use and it′s implications for society through insights into the daily experiences of ordinary users. Drawing on an original study of non-professional, ′ordinary′ users at home, this book examines how people interpret, domesticate and creatively appropriate the Internet by integrating it into the projects and activities of their everyday lives. Maria Bakardjieva′s theoretical framework uniquely combines concepts from several schools of thought (social constructivism, critical theory, phenomenological sociology) to provide a conception of the user as an agent in the field of technological development and new media shaping. She: - examines the evolution of the Internet into a mass medium - interrogates what users make of this new communication medium - evaluates the social and cultural role of the Internet by looking at the immediate level of users′ engagement with it - exposes the dual life of technology as invader and captive; colonizer and colonized This book will appeal to academics and researchers in social studies of technology, communication and media studies, cultural studies, philosophy of technology and ethnography.

| business & society journal: The SAGE Encyclopedia of Corporate Reputation Craig E. Carroll, 2016-05-04 What creates corporate reputations and how should organizations respond? Corporate reputation is a growing research field in disciplines as diverse as communication, management, marketing, industrial and organizational psychology, and sociology. As a formal area of academic study, it is relatively young with roots in the 1980s and the emergence of specialized reputation rankings for industries, products/services, and performance dimensions and for regions. Such rankings resulted in competition between organizations and the alignment of organizational activities to qualify and improve standings in the rankings. In addition, today’s changing stakeholder expectations, the growth of advocacy, demand for more disclosures and greater transparency, and globalized, mediatized environments create new challenges, pitfalls, and opportunities for organizations. Successfully engaging, dealing with, and working through reputational challenges requires an understanding of options and tools for organizational decision-making and stakeholder engagement. For the first time, the vast and important field of corporate reputation is explored in the format of an encyclopedic reference. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Corporate Reputation comprehensively overviews concepts and techniques for identifying, building, measuring, monitoring, evaluating, maintaining, valuing, living up to and/or changing corporate reputations. Key features include: 300 signed entries are organized in A-to-Z fashion in 2 volumes available in a choice of electronic or print formats Entries conclude with Cross-References and Further Readings to guide students to in-depth resources. | business & society journal: Business & Society Archie B. Carroll, Ann K. Buchholtz, 2006 BUSINESS AND SOCIETY employs a stakeholder management framework. This framework emphasizes a business's social, legal, political, andethical responsibilities to both external and internal groups that have a stake, or interest, in that business. It is a fundamental goal of the course that students really get that responsible business decision makers strive to balance and protect the interests of various stakeholders-investors, employees, community, environment, etc. An emphasis is also placed on the fact that one needs to understand that business situations will continually arise that will truly test ones values and ethics. BUSINESS AND SOCIETY not only exposes students to diverse and important stakeholder and ethical frameworks for considering and protecting stakeholder interests, through its use of cases andother real-world applications, this text enhances the precision with which students think about and practice ethical decision making.Opportunities to apply stakeholder and ethical systems to specific business problems abound, and questions are provided with all cases andapplications to focus student reasoning, ensuring excellent preparation for class discussions. |

business & society journal: The Body in Culture, Technology and Society Chris Shilling, 2005 'Once in a while a manuscript stops you in your tracks... What we are offered here is no recovering of old ground but a step change in perspectives on body matters that is both innovative and of fundamental importance to anyone working on this sociological terrain...This text is groundbreaking and simply has to be read' - Acta Sociologica 'This is Shilling at his creative best...these are seminal observations of the classical theories drawn together as never before. Moreover, as a framework [this monograph] provides a genuinely new and fertile way of reconsidering not just classical sociology but contemporary forms as well' - Sport, Education & Society 'This is a comprehensive, theoretically sophisticated, and ambitious treatise on the body that draws from, and applies, both classical and contemporary sociological theory in a manner that is innovative and thought-provoking. This book is engaging and thought-provoking, but Shilling's greatest achievement is his ability to illustrate the importance and continued relevance of classical and contemporary sociological theory to real world concerns. It is a book worthy of widespread attention. It reinvigorated my interest in the sociological classics and contained countless nuggets of interesting information that led me to conclude that it would be a worthy book to recommend to a broad sociological audience' - Teaching Sociology 'Shilling's book (like his earlier The Body and Social Theory) is crucial reading...a further valuable contribution in a field where he has provided so much' - Theory & Psychology 'This is an impressive book by one of the leading social theorists working in the field of body studies. It provides a critical summation of theoretical and substantive work in the field to date, while also presenting a powerful argument for a corporeal realism in which the body is both generative of the emergent properties of social structure and a location of their effects. Its scope and originality make it a key point of reference for students and academics in body studies and in the social and cultural sciences more generally' - Ian Burkitt, Reader in Social Science, University of Bradford 'Chris Shilling is as always a lucid guide through the dense thickets of the sociology of the body, and his chapters on the fields of work, sport, eating, music and technology brilliantly show how abstract theoretical debates relate to the real world of people's lives' - Professor Stephen Mennell, University College Dublin 'What I find very useful and without any doubt valuable, not only in Shilling's The Body in Culture, Technology and Society but in his work in general, is the breadth and profoundness of his discussion about the body...the style Shilling maintains is crucial for further development of the sociology of the body as a discipline, for it provides us with a rich intellectual environment about the body' - Sociology 'For any colleague wanting to have a clear idea of how studies of the body can be empirically grounded as well as theoretically 'rich', Chris Shilling's The Body in Culture, Technology and Society , is the book to read. To my mind it offers the best account thus far of not only how social action is embodied and must be recognised as such but also of how social structures condition and shape embodied subjects in a variety of social arenas... This is wonderful insightful 'stuff' - the ideas and intricate thoughts of a scholar such as Shilling who has been immersed in thinking about the complexities of the body in society as well as sociology for a number of years' - Sociology of Health and Illness This is a milestone in the sociology of the body. The book offers the most comprehensive overview of the field to date and an innovative framework for the analysis of embodiment. It is founded on a revised view of the relation of classical works to the body. It argues that the body should be read as a multi-dimensional medium for the constitution of society. Upon this foundation, the author constructs a series of analyses of the body and the economy, culture, sociality, work, sport, music, food and technology.

business & society journal: Brazilian Elites and Their Philanthropy Jessica Sklair, 2023-05-31 This book explores the philanthropy of Brazilian elites during a key period in recent Brazilian history, from Workers Party president Lula's last term in office through to the election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Against this backdrop of political upheaval, the book asks what philanthropy can reveal about the role of corporate and wealth elites in upholding the structures of socioeconomic inequality that continue to define Brazilian society. The book argues that around the world the private sector's growing engagement in international development has led to the emergence of a global philanthropic project centred on practices of philanthrocapitalism and social finance, which ultimately seeks to legitimise global capitalism and the elite interests it serves. Drawing on an in-depth and wide-ranging ethnographic study among philanthropists and their advisors in over 30 Brazilian foundations and intermediary organisations, the book combines a structural critique of the capitalist ideologies underlying philanthropic practice with a robust exploration into the ways in which wealthy Brazilians appropriate philanthropy directly to legitimise elite reproduction and the accumulation of wealth. Researchers across Latin American studies, development studies and the anthropology of development will find this book a timely contribution to the under-researched areas of elite studies and the study of philanthropy.

business & society journal: Business and Society Danica Purg, Alenka Braček Lalić, Jennifer A. Pope, 2018-06-26 The world of business is constantly evolving and management education institutions will likely face a number of challenges in keeping up with these changes. While most books focus on the needs of management education institutions, this work addresses the needs of the corporate world in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Featuring an extensive research study spanning 11 countries, it offers a unique perspective on the business challenges and developmental needs of companies in emerging and recently emerged economies, and on the missing links between those needs and management education. Using both company-specific and country-level data, the book provides businesses and educators with rare insights and recommendations on strengthening existing partnerships (or establishing them anew) between management education institutions and the corporate sector in order to make management education relevant for the 21st century. The book argues that ‘relevance’ should take the center-stage of all higher education institutions in order to accomplish their third mission, namely service to society. This is especially important for management education institutions, whose mission is to mold future managers and leaders who can have a significant influence on economic success and the wellbeing of society.

business & society journal: Handbook of Marketing and Society Paul N. Bloom, Gregory Thomas Gundlach, 2001 Marketing scholars have a long history of conducting research on how marketing affects the welfare of society. A significant body of knowledge has developed to look beyond marketing's impact on the corporate bottom line towards the affects of marketing on consumer sovereignty, public health, economic growth, and other aspect of societal welfare. The large and growing amount of research has become fragmented and diverse. There is a need for a volume to pull all of this research together to facilitate the assessment of what we have learned and what we need to study further. This volume fills that need! Handbook of Marketing and Society presents the first comprehensive, in-depth examination of scholarly research on how marketing affects societal welfare. Drawing on the talents of a distinguished group of contributors, the editors have assembled key reviews, analyses, and perspectives on a broad range of research topics including deceptive advertising, warning labels, trademark infringement, antitrust enforcement, environmental labels, privacy protection, social marketing, and corporate societal marketing. An unifying model is presented in the introduction that illustrates the linkage of marketing knowledge, marketing decisions, and societal welfare. Each chapter covers, in a purposeful way, a different link or path through which marketing can affect societal welfare. Future research needs are identified in each chapter in order to help focus marketing thinking and marketing practice serve society more effectively. Academics, graduate students, and others interested in marketing's role in society will find this a valuable resource and an excellent guidebook for future research.
